I started playing the clarinet at age 10 in my elementary school band under
the direction of Mr. Ron Maier. Prior to this, the extent of my music experience
was banging on pan lids with a plastic spoon as a small child (why didn't I
become a drummer?). I dinked along for a few years
until, when I was about 14, a friend invited me to attend a rehearsal of the
Seattle Classical Youth Orchestra to which she belonged. I'm not sure that I
really had a formal audition into the the Seattle Youth Symphony Organization,
but I somehow weaseled my way into it for the last half of the season and began
to play under the direction of Mr. Walter Cole. Everyone was much better than
me, and everyone took private lessons, so I decided to start lessons under the
expertise of Ms. Kim Fay. I studied with her for two years until she took a
little time off to pursue other interests, at which point I began to study with
Mr. Holly Bertran. After playing in the Seattle Classical Youth Orchestra for 3
1/2 years (one of those years with Mr. Alexei Girsh), I decided to switch to the
Bellevue Youth Symphony, which was closer to my home. I am currently studying with Mr. Bertran and am a member of the Bellevue Youth
Symphony. I also belong to the Symphonic Band at
Juanita High School, directed by Mr. Bruce Gutgesell, and play in a quartet
called the Wonderful Juanita Woodwind Quartet. Over the past two years, I've had
the privilege of teaching clarinet lessons (in music camps and privately) and
participating in a number of regional contests and performances such as the
regional Solo/Ensemble contest, and the All-Northwest/All-State performances.
After graduating high school, I will be serving in the Army Reserve while
attending the University of Washington. While in school, I plan to major in
music education and forensics. |
